Bradley Bugle - OCTOBER 2007

El artista famoso- Van Moth!

Reported by: Poppy Hellaby, Megan Mason and Meg Hughes

Would you believe that Steven Kutcher uses insects to paint for him! He uses moths, beetles, butterflies, grasshoppers, honey bees, spiders and cockroaches all from Madagascar. He puts them in paint and then makes them walk all over the blank canvas. Mr Kutcher uses living paintbrushes, guiding them by their reaction to light. Mr Kutcher said “I dip them in paint leg by leg then off they go leaving a little trail of footprints behind them. If the bug is sensitive to light I can control them with light so they move all over the canvas”.
The artist lives in Los Angeles. Steven says “I use water based non-
toxic colours which easily wash off so it doesn’t harm the insects. I have to take good care of the bugs.”
Mr Kutcher’s bug art grew out of his work as an insect handler for Hollywood films, including Spiderman. He helped paint the tiny red and blue spider that took a bite out of the star Toby Maguire and turned him into a super hero.
